Wünderstudies Celebrates One Year of Improvised Musicals with Cabaret Show
Wünderstudies will celebrate one year of spontaneous comedy musicals with an anniversary performance at the Cabaret at Theater Square on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 10:30pm.
Wünderstudies creates hilarious musical theater on the fly. Armed with only a title suggested by an audience member, the wonderfully talented cast and crew weave together music, comedy, and story into an hour of delightful entertainment. Every aspect of the show is improvised on the spot by the cast, the instrumentalists, and the crew. Every word, every note, and every spotlight is spontaneous and unplanned.
Wünderstudies formed in June 2011 to perform the troupe’s first improvised musical at Steel City Improv Theater in the North Side. The troupe has performed monthly at the theater ever since, with shows currently playing on the first Saturday of each month at 8:00 PM.
“When we started, Pittsburgh didn’t have any troupes who made musical improv comedy a central part of what they did,” said keyboardist Benjamin Saalbach-Walsh. “Since we’ve been performing, a scene has been developing, including other acts such as The LuPones, Nebby Spectres, and The Wandering Minstrels, all based at Steel City Improv Theater.”
Wünderstudies has also appeared at numerous other events, both within Pittsburgh and beyond, producing 20-minute mini-musicals for a variety of audiences. The troupe recently made their near-Broadway debut at the New York City Improv Festival, performing alongside one of New York’s premiere musical improv troupes, Broadway’s Next Hit Musical.
The June 16 show will be Wünderstudies’ first performance at the Cabaret at Theater Square. “The Cabaret often hosts musical theater shows and improv comedy shows. Wünderstudies fuses the two forms together, so we’re excited to finally bring our show to the Cabaret audience,” said director Brett Bavar.

Go West
In the Short North Arts District of Columbus, Ohio, there is a wonderful little store called Collier West. I often make it a point to go look around whenever I’m in the neighborhood.
The website has an online store where you can buy goodies, but the best experience is to actually visit the store, if you can. The décor is basically what I want my house to look like - a little cluttered and a lot antique and intriguing. You feel like everything you look at is part of the whole of the store’s aesthetic…like an antique store, but curated.
Antlers are everywhere (and for sale), as are branches, nature-inspired lighting fixtures, and lots of local and not-local original artware (like ceramics, plates, and jewelry). I even spotted the ceramic art of Laura Zindel, that we blogged about last year!
If you ever find yourself among the fab restaurants and art galleries of Columbus, make sure you drop into this jewel of a store; you will be very glad you did.
